"As part of the M1 Commemorative painting, I needed to populate the painting with images of soldiers conducting a patrol. At the time I was billeted with Security Detachment IX which was manned by Military Police, Infantrymen from 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment and Lighthorsemen from 2nd/14th Lighthorse Regiment, Queensland Mounted Infantry.

The men of 3rd Battalion are paratroopers and some of these men agreed to pose for me so that I could take photos, make sketches and then later, some watercolour sketches. The image at left is one of these watercolour sketches showing a paratrooper with a Paratrooper Minimi machine gun with folding stock and short barrel and magazine."
