The Forward Observation party of an artillery unit would, in times gone by, move with the frontline units such as infantry and would call in fire support as required. Normally the FO would give a grid coordinate to the gunline by radio of where he assessed the artillery rounds should fall. When the rounds exploded in front of him, he would 'walk' the artillery to the target by providing guidance on whether the gun/s should be aimed further right or left or their range extended or shortened.

Now, with modern technology, the FO party of the new M777 artillery piece can designate a target using a laser such as the one pictured here. He can then remotely fire the gun. The ammunition is GPS guided and will fall virtually onto the GPS coordinates sent by the FO.
