"The M113 was manufactured by the Food Machinery and Chemical Corporation and was the mainstay of infantry mobility in the Australian Army and other armies."

"Equipping the Cavalry and Light Horse regiments of the Australian Army and Mechanized Infantry battalions, the M113 was unusual in that it never received a name and was only known by its designation as the '113' or, in Australia, as 'buckets'. Oddly enough, the US Army did hold a competition to name it with the winning name being 'Gavin'. Fortunately, this name didn't take!

"During the Vietnam war, the 1st Australian Task Force was served by 1 APC Sqn, who later went on to become A Sqn,3rd Cavalry Regiment. One of the notable battles involving 1 APC SQN was its support to Delta Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (D/6 RAR) during the battle of Long Tan.

"The 'tracks' - as they were known - raced in support of the besieged D Company and many of the vehicles raced through artillery fire from Australian and US artillery supporting the company in their effort to assist the infantrymen, all the while battling the enemy.

"Anyone who reads an account of the battle could honestly say that Hollywood could not write a more fantastic script.

"The vehicle depicted bottom left is representative of the M113s used in Vietnam with the locally manufactured steel gun shield forming some protection for the crew commander on the M2HB .50 cal machine gun.
