Matilda Infantry Tank in Profile   Matilda Infantry Tank in Profile Print Size TBA   "The Matilda tank was a British-designed tank that saw service with the Australian Armoured Regiments during the Second World War. In North Afrika, it proved an effective - if temperamental - weapon against Italian and German tanks and was protected by thick armour that made it relatively safe from enemy tanks. Production of the Matilda ceased in 1943 but Australian armoured units continued to operate the type in the South West Pacific theatre of operations right up until the end of the war. The image top left shows a Mark IV Matilda in desert colours; the other image shows a Matilda 'Frog' flame thrower variant which was used effectively against the Japanese in New Guinea.     A Matilda tank of the Australian Armoured Corps ca 1945.
