Portrait of an ASLAV Crewman (Oil Sketch)
Oil on canvas board
356mm x 457mm
2008
Collection of the artist
"An artist must be able to render what he or she sees... either in
real life or in his or her imagination. When the impressionists gained
ascendancy in the late 19th Century, a common criticism was that their
work was 'unfinished' and were merely sketches. But it was this
'roughness' that appealed to people."
"Another facet of this type of painting was the use of what's
known as a 'limited palette' of colours. There are so many colours
available to artists these days that it is often a temptation to
'collect' 20 or 30 different colours! Art colleges encourage a small
range of colours from which an artist should be able to create a full
rainbow of colours required. This image was not only a practice oil
sketch, but was also an experiment with a limited palette. It was
created in a little under an hour. Firstly, the canvas board was painted
with a rough colour of acrylic raw sienna, then the image was sketched
in about 10 minutes using a charcoal pencil and then the colours
applied."
"The colours used are shown below."
